Actor, activist, poet, and educator Billie Jean Young works at home and abroad on behalf of social and economic justice for all people. A MacArthur Fellow, she has educated and inspired hundreds of audiences the world over through her poetry, lectures, drama workshops and community organizing.

For over two decades, she has shared with the world the life story of human rights activist and sharecropper from Sunflower County, Mississipi, Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer. In her moving performances of the one-woman play Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light and in her efforts to give voice to the social and economic injustices currently effecting the people of the Black Belt region of the deep South, Billie Jean seeks to make change in the world in the spirit of Fannie Lou Hamer.
